Negative Keywords In Google Adwords

Are negative keywords important? Yes they are. They are extremely important. Negative keywords are keywords put in place across your ad groups and campaigns to ensure people do not waste your budget looking for services or products that do not relate to your campaign.

Negative keywords should be used without a second thought. The most common negative keywords that I would add to a campaign before I even start the management process are the following:

  • Free
  • DIY
  • Jobs
  • Downloads
  • Photos
  • Images
  • Information
  • Tips
  • Define

I add these, as well as variants of them, as broad match negative keywords. Just adding these keywords will save you a lot of money. If you are running a campaign, try using the ad preview tool and search for Free and add your main keyword. Are you coming up? If you are, you will see the importance of adding negatives to your Adwords campaign.

Below I will show you how easy it is to add negative keywords to your campaign.

Remember to check your search terms often to get new ideas for negative keywords, and add them. You might end up with more negatives than normal keywords.

If we dig deeper into the negatives, we will see that we can add [exact] and “phrase” match keywords as well.

Long tail keywords that trigger your ads often should be added to your campaign and keywords such as What Is and What Are can be added as phrase matches. This will save you a lot of budget!
